How to write an engineering job?

Engineering work allows you to obtain the title of engineer. It serves primarily to prove that we are able to use both what we have learned in college, as well as research and concepts included in professional literature. From bachelor’s and master’s thesis, it differs primarily with the use of other methods. The university expects us to demonstrate the ability to solve engineering tasks, using general and specialist knowledge and that we will prove that we are able to use modern tools of engineering. Engineering work should be based on close connection of research work with engineering practice.

A characteristic feature of engineering work is the extensive practical part. It is her testimony to our ability to use the acquired knowledge. As a rule, engineering work should be of project, descriptive and design or descriptive-use character, and in some directions also analytical-descriptive or empirical.

To write a good engineering job:

  1. Choose the issue / subject / issues that interest us and the promoter

The theoretically engineering work should, of course, be related to the direction of our studies and the specialty we chose. As a rule, the university presents suggestions for future promoters of the work, who indicate specific topics that can be written in their care.

The choice should be guided by two criteria. The first is our interests and skills. At this stage of study, we already know what is fascinating and what we are good at. The second criterion is the promoter. It is worth asking among students of older years, with whom academic teachers work well. It may happen that we want to write a job for a particular promoter, but the topics proposed by us do not suit us. In such a situation, you can always make an appointment and try to convince him to agree to become a job supervisor on a completely different topic.

  1. Discuss the action plan with the promoter

For a meeting with the promoter, on which we determine the course of cooperation, we should prepare an initial concept of the work – its purpose, plan proposal, outline of the project implementation or development of the concept. The work supervisor will take us much more seriously, seeing that we are taking independent action. It will also be easier for him to refer to what we have prepared than to develop a concept with us from the beginning.

During the meeting with the promoter, it is worth taking notes, asking about what we think is unclear, making sure we understand a problem well, ask for an explanation of what we are in trouble with. The more we discuss the work with the promoter in more detail, the less we will make adjustments later.

  1. Get acquainted with the literature of the subject

The engineering work contains a theoretical part, the aim of which is to review current research. Of course, it is about research on the issue we are dealing with. To do this, you need to collect relevant professional literature. The current literature is primarily contained in scientific journals. It is worth asking the promoter for help, he will definitely show us what to look for.

  1. Construct the work structure

Engineering work should consist of the following parts:

  • Table of Contents,
  • summary,
  • introduction containing an introduction to the subject of the discussed work and justification of the choice of the topic,
  • the purpose of the work formulated in the form of a concrete thesis and the scope of work indicating the scale of research narrowing,
  • review of current literature,
  • design or concept (this part should include detailed assumptions regarding the problem in question, materials used, methods, treatments, possibly the calculation of project costs or other important information),
  • conclusions,
  • list of literature,
  • attachments.

Requirements concerning the formatting of the work – what should be the font, spacing, types of footnotes, what the title page should look like, how to sign the figures and tables – most often they are clearly indicated by each university.

  1. Write next chapters.

Ideally, according to the structure of work, start with the purpose of work and literature review. Then develop the project. Finally, we draw conclusions and formulate them in the end. We write the introduction and the summary at the very end.

  1. Check the text for language and stylistics.

What should you remember?

engineering work should prove the knowledge of the engineering workshop – the ability to make design calculations, technical drawings, the use of price lists, standards, patents,

it can not be only descriptive,

it must include defining the problem and its individual components,

should use analytical, simulation, experimental or statistical methods, especially when analyzing measurement data,

as a rule, it is required that the engineering work includes at least 30 pages.
